The Idea

To my defense, I was bored when I came up with this idea.

I was using a lot of GIFs when communicating over text. It got to a point where I was too lazy to click several buttons and type what I think would be a good GIF. And, I decided to automate this – an AI agent that reads my chat and suggests GIFs based on the conversation.

What Went Wrong

Some GIFs require true taste and humor which AI sucks at but there are many low-hanging and funny cases where I thought it could do well. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The suggestions that AI came up with was pretty lame. It was having this socially oblivious person in a group chat that always sends the most irrelevant messages. It was a good exercise but no one would pay for this and keeping it up and paying for LLM calls didn’t make any sense.

Lessons Learned

• Just because you can do something with AI doesn’t mean that you should. Know the limitations of the technologies that you work with. Gen AI’s biggest limitation is its lack of novelty.
